"Jupiter's Purse," the debut EP from Dallas musician MATTIE, has garnered positive reviews from Pitchfork and Bandcamp.

Mattie Calloway, known simply as MATTIE, is attracting national attention for their latest project, a kaleidoscopic record that sounds both expansive and deeply intimate.

MATTIE's debut EP, 鈥淛upiter鈥檚 Purse," has received a coveted 8.0 rating from . has gushed over its trippy, alien sound. The Oak Cliff-based musician fuses elements of electronic music, hip hop and ambient to create deep meditations on identity, reality and transcendentalism.

鈥淭he music is really just myself happening in recordings,鈥 MATTIE said. 鈥淛ust that question of 鈥淲ho am I?鈥 It's like reaching out for the clarity of self. I want to know, and I want to know now.鈥

MATTIE captured their self-reflections with help of Dallas producer , laying down tracks at Elmwood Recording Studio. The EP鈥檚 title alludes to Jupiter鈥檚 significance in astrology as a signal of growth and expansion.

鈥淲herever Jupiter is in your astrological chart, it's there to take something and to magnetize it, magnify it, and make it bigger,鈥 MATTIE said. 鈥淲aiting for the moment that we kick back into our remembrance of ourselves to expand it to light.鈥

The EP鈥檚 five tracks follow a loose narrative guided by Mhuv, a character of sorts that MATTIE uses to personify human consciousness. MATTIE moves from moments of egotism (like on 鈥淐ellfish鈥) to moments of transcendental clarity (like on 鈥淐loudts鈥).

鈥淢huv is that energy that moves through all of us that says, you can't stop here,鈥 the musician said. 鈥淵ou can't stop in the human experience. You were before it, so you've got to make that full complete circle back around to remembering yourself as before [the human experience] as though you never forgot.

An , directed by visual artist , brings MATTIE鈥檚 music to life on the screen, illuminating their penchant for vibrant color and avant garde aesthetics. It also spotlights MATTIE鈥檚 other medium of choice: cosmetology.

鈥淚 get to work with all types of people, but normally with curly, kinky hair,鈥 MATTIE said. 鈥淪o, I'm working with my ancestry and working with the roots. That鈥檚 a really beautiful medium to bend and to mold.鈥

Though seemingly vastly different mediums, MATTIE sees both music and hair as powerful modes of expression. They refer to both as 鈥渕irrors.鈥 (D Magazine鈥檚 Taylor Crumpton about MATTIE鈥檚 work as a hairdresser.)

鈥淛upiter鈥檚 Purse鈥 is out now.
