Just as in previous years, the features an assorted mix of quality films ranging from family-friendly features to oddball documentaries.
What's different? Festival co-director Ashton Campbell said this year鈥檚 festival has more documentaries.
鈥淚t鈥檚 been kind of a joke running through our staff meetings into the fest, is that, that we're very doc-heavy. We're like the 鈥極ak Cliff Documentary Film Festival鈥 in a kind of funny way,鈥 Campbell said.

鈥淏utterfly in the Sky鈥 is the festival鈥檚 opening film. Campbell calls it a 鈥減owerful鈥 documentary about the inspirational PBS kids鈥 show 鈥淭he Reading Rainbow鈥 and host LeVar Burton鈥檚 journey to get the show on the air.
Many films are holding their Texas or regional premiere during the festival, including 鈥淢eet Me in the Bathroom鈥 about the eclectic music scene in New York City鈥檚 Lower East Side during the early 2000鈥檚 that incubated musical acts like The Strokes, Interpol and The Moldy Peaches.
鈥32 Sounds鈥 is an immersive feature documentary by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Sam Green which Campbell calls a 鈥渃inematic meditation.鈥
Feature film showings include the quirky animated full-length 鈥淢arcel the Shell with Shoes On鈥 about a talking shell that became a viral YouTube sensation and 鈥淭hree Headed Beast鈥 by Texas-based filmmakers Fernando Andr茅s and Tyler Rugh about a couple navigating an open relationship.
The festival is also showcasing new local talent with its showing of student-made films during 鈥淭exas Shorts鈥 segment. There will also be a live performance by Oak Cliff native Jacks Haupt, one of the subjects of the documentary 鈥淢颈箩补鈥 on Friday night.
Campbell said this year鈥檚 festival promises to be one of the premiere hyperlocal events of the summer.
鈥淚 think we have a pretty decent reputation about being a film festival that like doesn't doesn't worry about the boundaries and is okay with pushing them in order to get the things out there that we think need to be seen,鈥 Campbell said.
