Fans of Austin folk-rockers Wild Child might be surprised by singer Kelsey Wilson鈥檚 latest funk-soul project, Sir Woman. Forget ukuleles and fiddles. This is raw R&B in the mode of Stevie Wonder鈥檚 Innervisions.
Sir Woman 鈥� performing April 26 in Fort Worth 鈥� recently released If It All Works Out, produced by Denton鈥檚 Matt Pence. It鈥檚 the buoyant first half of a double album. The darker second part, If It Doesn鈥檛 (due out May 16), was recorded with Dallas producer Jason Burt, with songs inspired by Wilson鈥檚 bumpy path toward sobriety.
While she hasn鈥檛 quit Wild Child, the singer says R&B is 鈥渢he music I was raised on. I had just been making folk music professionally [by] accident,鈥� Wilson said on the Austin station KUTX, explaining that neo-soul bands like prompted her to launch Sir Woman. 鈥淚t feels like there鈥檚 a resurgence of real [music]. It鈥檚 not so electronic anymore. I鈥檓 so happy it鈥檚 back.鈥�
