Dallas Police Chief Rene茅 Hall met with Mike Mata with the Dallas Police Association in 2019. Hall announced her resignation in September, but is staying with the department through December.

The city of Dallas has announced seven finalists for police chief.

They include three internal candidates, as well as a former deputy chief.

Other finalists include Irving's police chief, as well as police chiefs in California and Virginia.

Interviews start next week. The next chief should be in place early next year.

In the meantime, the city has appointed 23-year department veteran Lonzo Anderson as interim chief starting Tuesday.

Chief Rene茅 Hall announced her resignation in September but agreed to stay on through this month.

The Dallas candidates are:

  • Avery Moore 鈥 assistant police chief, Dallas Police Department
  • Malik Aziz 鈥 major, Dallas Police Department
  • Reuben Ramirez 鈥 deputy chief, Dallas Police Department
  • Albert Martinez 鈥 director of security for Dallas Catholic Dioceses and former Dallas PD deputy chief
  • Jeff Spivey 鈥 chief of Irving police
  • Eddie Garcia 鈥 chief of police in San Jose, California
  • RaShall Brackney 鈥 chief of police in Charlottesville, Virginia

A recruitment firm vetted 36 applicants from across the U.S.

鈥淚鈥檓 pleased to report our progress in this process,鈥 Dallas City Manager Broadnax said in a statement. 鈥淎nd [I] know the men and women of DPD look forward to new leadership continuing the work Chief Hall began towards R.E.A.L. change 鈥 responsibly, equitably, accountably and legitimately reimagining public safety.鈥

In 2017, Hall became the first woman and the first Black woman to lead the Dallas force. But she came under fire in recent months for the way the police department handled this summer's protests against police brutality. Some City Council members have criticized her leadership.

The city of Fort Worth is also looking for a police chief and officials this week.
