The sun flares above the Supreme Court, Monday, July 9, 2018, in Washington.

President Donald Trump has nominated to replace Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy.

The announcement Monday night came less than two weeks after the high court’s swing voter announced his retirement. If confirmed, Kavanaugh would solidify the Supreme Court's conservative majority.

The president  ahead of the prime-time announcement, confirming only Monday afternoon that he'd made a final decision.

Besides Kavanaugh, top contenders for the role included federal appeals judges Raymond Kethledge, Amy Coney Barrett and Thomas Hardiman.

The White House said earlier Monday that former Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., would guide the nominee through the confirmation process, including preparing the nominee for meetings with senators.

This is Trump's second Supreme Court pick of his administration. He nominated Neil Gorsuch last year to replace the late Antonin Scalia.
