An explosion at a liquefied natural gas terminal in Freeport has left nearby residents rattled and is taking a substantial amount of the fuel off the market at a time when global demand is soaring.

Three units across the state will be at least temporarily closed this month, according to the Texas prison system. The agency hopes it will help with dangerously low staffing levels.

The city鈥檚 water utility is trying to purge its system of any 鈥渙ld water鈥� so the system can be disinfected and replaced with fresh water. Lake Jackson residents are still urged to boil their tap water before using it.

The city is now under a boil water notice as of 10 p.m. Saturday, the governor and city officials said.
