This election season for the Denton ISD school board isn鈥檛 crowded, but two seats have attracted candidates with classroom experience, as well as a local community organizer.

With Denton Mayor Gerard Hudspeth鈥檚 third and final term coming to an end, four candidates have entered the mayoral race to represent Denton and lead a City Council that will see three new members for Districts 1 and 2 and citywide Place 5.

Denton County鈥檚 primary turnout diverged from statewide trends in the March 3 elections. While Democrats cast more ballots statewide, Republicans narrowly led locally. Overall turnout reached 25.6%, with Democratic participation surging compared with recent primaries.

Denton City Council members have approved early voting and election day polling locations for the May 2 municipal election.

Endorsed by Gov. Greg Abbott in her bid for a third term, Edmondson now finds herself facing three Republican opponents in the March 3 primary: Gerard Hudspeth, the current Denton mayor; Valerie Roehrs, a former corporate executive turned rancher; and David Wylie, a Denton County GOP precinct chair, election judge and committee member of the state Republican Party.

The Frisco city council place 1 election recount confirmed that Ann Anderson defeated Mark Piland.

Gerard Hudspeth, who's in his last term as mayor of Denton, is working to secure the Republican nomination for Denton County Precinct 4 commissioner. He's facing the incumbent and two other challengers in the March 3 primary.

Denton mayoral candidates gathered for a forum Monday night at the Village Church near the University of North Texas to discuss how they plan to tackle such topics as growth, homelessness and affordable housing.
