H. Lynn Hadnot has been named Dallas County's juvenile director. He'll oversees the juvenile department, and the detention center 鈥� and head the board.

State lawmakers didn鈥檛 seem swayed by top officials with the Texas Juvenile Justice Department, who said on Monday that reports of rampant abuse within the agency鈥檚 facilities aren鈥檛 reflective of the department鈥檚 current climate.

Luis Zayas, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Texas at Austin, is author of the book 鈥淭hrough Iceboxes and Kennels: How Immigration Detention Harms Children and Families.鈥�

The Houston native was arrested in Russia in mid-February, and her trial starts Friday. State department officials say Griner was 鈥渨rongfully detained.鈥�

The lawyer for the 31-year-old athlete said Friday her pre-trial detention in Russia has been extended by one month. Griner faces a trial on drug possession charges in mid-June.

Russian authorities said earlier this month that they detained Griner at a Moscow-area airport for allegedly transporting vape cartridges containing hashish oil in her luggage.

Over 10,000 immigrant children are in U.S. custody. In the past year, lawyers say at least 170 willing sponsors were arrested and put in deportation proceedings after coming forward for the child.
