Students and school staff have experienced traumatic events like the Uvalde shooting and finding a new normal after the COVID-19 pandemic in 2022.

Dallas ISD鈥檚 Mental Health Services Department supports children and their families through life and learning challenges. After Executive Director Tracey Brown learned of the shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde where 19 children and two adults were killed, she said it was 鈥渁ll things crisis response support鈥� for her and the clinicians she oversees.

The policy sidelines educators, often for two school years, at a time when districts are already struggling to keep teachers in the classrooms.

In many places in Texas, staffing shortages are causing teachers to burn out, while continuing to cover for sick coworkers.
