Jackie Sawicky, 34, lives in Garland. Sawicky is choosing to pay the penalty for not signing up for health insurance.

If and when the technical problems on the online health insurance marketplace clear up, millions of people are expected to enroll. Not Jackie Sawicky.

Jackie Sawicky is exactly the type of person President Obama needs to sign up for Obamacare. She鈥檚 young, healthy and uninsured. Too bad she thinks his health care overhaul is a failure.

鈥淚 feel like I鈥檓 being penalized for being healthy and for taking care of myself,鈥 Sawicky says.

Sawicky, who鈥檚 34, lives in Garland with her husband Jeffrey and two dogs. She鈥檚 been uninsured for years, which isn鈥檛 to say she鈥檚 not familiar with the insurance system. Before she started a career in web design, Sawicky worked in a North Texas medical office handling claims and collections.

鈥淎t one point,鈥 Sawicky says, 鈥淚 was dealing with cancer patients, people who had just had major surgery, and I had to look them in the eye and ask them for large sums of money.鈥

Sawicky is so sick of the for-profit health care industry, she says, she鈥檚 decided to pay the rather than sign up. Besides, she says, the rates aren鈥檛 affordable when you add in deductibles and co-pays.

Sawicky wishes the Affordable Care Act had embraced a . You can imagine, she says, the response she gets from many Texans who see that as akin to socialism.

鈥淵ou know what, I love Texas,鈥 Sawicky says. 鈥淎nd when people say you don鈥檛 like it, get out. You know what, I鈥檓 a real conservative, because I believe in saving the planet and saving each other.鈥

Progressive, Conservative, label her how you鈥檇 like, Sawicky says come January the only thing she won鈥檛 be labeled is insured.
