More than 826,000 handgun license holders in Texas can carry their guns in visible holsters on their hip or shoulder, thanks to the state’s new open carry law. Previously, gun owners had to obtain a concealed handgun license and keep it concealed.
Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick was on NBC’s yesterday to talk to host Chuck Todd about the law.
Public grade schools, hospitals, sporting events, courthouses and nursing homes are still gun-free zones.
The law does allow private businesses to ban guns if they choose. So far, businesses such as HEB, Torchy’s Tacos, Whataburger, Whole Foods, and IKEA have opted out. Businesses who choose to ban guns must display signs for customers.
911 call takers have also been trained to handle any additional calls as a result of the law change.
