The head of the Department of Family and Protective Services is asking to hire 550 new front-line workers. The request by Hank Whitman comes after Governor Greg Abbott asked the department to submit plans to hire and train more investigators.
Numbers from Family and Protective Services show nearly a thousand at-risk children across the state were not checked on once over the course of six months.
The reports the plan would station 88 percent of the 550 workers in North Texas, Harris County and the Austin region.
However, vacancies still exist. As of August, there were 389 unfilled CPS caseworker jobs statewide.
