Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings today is scheduled to testify in front of the State House Pensions Committee. He told the he won’t support legislation meant to save the failing Police and Fire Pension Fund because it binds the city to minimum payments into the system, calling the move a “taxpayer bailout.â€
Bad investments and unsustainable benefits could bankrupt the fund within a decade without a legislative solution. Rawlings has pushed for a legislative fix to the fund - with the way the pension board's governance is set up.
Van Representative Dan Flynn filed the legislation. In a statement, he said police and fire retirees "will be damaged by the mayor’s position."
