Top Stories: CHIP Funding Decision Looms; Reading Along With Barbers

Federal lawmakers say they're working on a plan to continue the Children's Health Insurance Program. It provides coverage for nearly 400,000 children and pregnant women in Texas. they could vote on the issue by Wednesday.

  • It could be a while before southeast Texans receive federal funds to pay for the long-term recovery of homes and communities affected by Harvey. , state lawmakers were told yesterday that Housing and Urban Development disaster relief funds, could take seven to 32 months to resolve. It includes money for extensive home repairs or rebuilds. 

  • Schools are finding creative ways to get kids to read more. In Fort Worth, the district is going outside the classroom. It’s placing books inside barber shops and encouraging barbers to read with kids. ËÄ»¢Ó°Ôºâ€™s Stella Chavez checked out the scene at one barber shop.
