For 13 years, Lupe Valdez was the Dallas County Sheriff. Today, of the nine Texas Democrats running for governor, she’s the only woman in the race. After a career in law enforcement, she jokes that being a candidate has been something of an adjustment.
Despite some high-profile appearances at Democratic events, she’s not much of a household name outside of Dallas County. As she introduces herself to voters, she talks about her upbringing – the eighth child of migrant farm workers – and her time as sheriff of Texas’ second largest county.
